About St. John United Church of Christ

History & Who We Are Today

St. John United Church of Christ in New Holstein at 2111 Church street, was the first congregation to be organized in the city of New Holstein on February 10,1865, and has been serving the city of New Holstein ever since. St. John Church is affiliated with the United Church of Christ denomination which came into being in 1957 when the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian churches united. The motto “that they may all be one” is a quote from Jesus that Christians everywhere recognize the things that bind us together rather than the differences among us.  Whatever your denominational background or wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome at St. John United Church of Christ. Our church is a member of the Northeast Association of the Wisconsin Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Beliefs & Sacraments

True to our reformation heritage we recognize two sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion. We practice infant baptism but do baptize adult converts as well.  We believe that Christ's call "Come to Me" is unconditional, and as Christ's disciples, in St. John United Church of Christ, we strive to live out this call to be the Body of Christ in our world. We practice open communion inviting all who are communicant members of another church to receive the sacrament with us. Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of every month and on special days as announced.

Church Governance

St. John United Church of Christ is governed by our congregation.  The oversight and management of the congregation is carried out by the Church Council which is elected by the congregation.  Our Pastor, Rev. Michael Stafford-Kennedy, oversees the worship and spiritual life of the congregation.

Worship & Christian Education

Worship services and Sunday school are held at 10:15 a.m. every Sunday morning.  Holy Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of every month and on holidays and special days as announced.  St. John United Church of Christ practices open communion which means that all adult baptized Christians are welcome at the Lord's Table.
Sunday school classes are offered for children ages 4 through 7th grade during the worship hour.  Children attend the first part of the service with their parents or guardians, then are dismissed to their classes after the Children's sermon with Pastor Werner.  St. John United Church of Christ also has an active Adult Bible Study group that meets at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday mornings from September through May and is taught by Pastor Michael Stafford-Kennedy.

Mission Outreach

St. John United Church of Christ participates in our denominational All Church offerings for One Great Hour of Sharing and for Neighbors In Need.  We also collect food for the local food pantry, Toys For Tots, Church World Service Blanket Sunday, and other charitable collections throughout the year.
